Fastening Devices, Standard Insulation Anchors

Standard insulation anchors are used to support either batt insulation or rigid board insulation on walls, ceilings or roof applications. They are usually glued into place, but can also be secured with screws. The anchor has a 2" by 2" perforated, 12 gauge low carbon steel, galvanized base. The anchor features a low carbon steel nail or spindle that comes in various lengths. A self-locking washer is placed at the end of the nail or spindle to insure that the batt or board stays in place.
When using adhesive to secure the anchors, the adhesive should be maintained at room temperature. The anchor installation should be completed and the glue should be given about 24 hours before the batts or boards are impaled. The anchors are usually placed 12" to 16" apart. One gallon of adhesive is normally sufficient for 500 to 1000 anchors.
Insulation anchors can also be special ordered in stainless steel or all aluminum. Sizes, other than those shown below, are also available via special order.

Self-Locking Washers
Self-locking washers are used with both standard insulation anchors and the self-stick (peel and press) insulation anchors. They are provided in boxes of 1000. They are usually supplied in 12 gauge, galvanized, mild steel. The standard 1 1/2" round and square washers (first & second illustrations above) are beveled to prevent them from cutting into the insulation. They are simply pressed onto the nail or spindle and pushed down to the appropriate position. The spindle or nail can be left sticking out, bent over or clipped off. They are usually supplied in 12 gauge mild steel. They are also available in 10 or 14 gauge, in stainless steel, or in aluminum by special order.
The dome cap or safety washer (far right, above) is simply pushed onto the spindle until the spindle contacts the top of the dome. The tip of the nail or spindle is then covered to reduce the potential risk of injury. These washers are 12 gauge, galvanized, mild steel and are 7/8" in diameter. They are very expensive, are provided in boxes of 1000, and are generally not used unless they are written into the specifications.

Hanger's Adhesive
This non slip, immediate grab adhesive is designed to be used with insulation anchors. It bonds insulation anchors to walls and ceilings, as well as to concrete or masonry surfaces and provides excellent water/mildew resistance. Setting or curing time varies from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the weather. One gallon will secure from 500 to 1,000 insulation anchors. The adhesive is usually applied to the anchor with a putty knife and the anchor is applied to the surface with a twisting motion. The service temperature for this product ranges from -30 degrees F to 250 degrees F.
Surfaces should be clean and dry. They should also be free of oil, grease, frost or any foreign matter before the adhesive is applied. The adhesive should be maintained and applied at room temperature. Adhesive should be allowed to dry or set for 24 to 72 hours before batt or board insulation is impaled on the anchors.

Fastening Devices, Self-Stick (Peel & Press) Anchors
Self-stick (Peel and Press) Anchors are furnished in 12 gauge, galvanized, low carbon steel. They are also available, via special order, in stainless steel or all aluminum. They are used with the self-locking washers shown on this page.
These anchors come in the following sizes: 1", 1 5/8", 2", 2 1/2", 3 1/2", 4 1/2", 5 1/2", 6 1/2", 8", and 9". We don't recommend the use of these anchors in the larger sizes. They are not as easy to apply as it would seem because the surface to which they are applied must be perfectly prepared or the anchors will not adhere well.
